When the contractors leave, the project is not quite finished. Construction and renovation work leaves fine dust and debris on nearly every surface, including places you would not expect.
Construction dust is different from ordinary household dust. It is finer, settles in vents, on window tracks and inside cabinets, and can spread to rooms that were not part of the renovation. Wiping it dry often just moves it around, so cleaning is usually done in stages.
A common sequence is a rough clean first: removing larger debris and vacuuming dust from floors, ledges and corners. Then comes a detail clean: wiping walls, doors, frames and fixtures, cleaning cabinets inside and out, and washing windows and floors.
Work from top to bottom here too. Ceilings, fans and light fixtures come before shelves and counters, and floors come last. Vacuum first, then wash, so you are not turning dust into mud.
Timing matters. Schedule the final clean after all trades are finished, since painting, sanding or flooring work afterward will just create more dust. It can also help to schedule a pre-construction clean, so the space is ready and surfaces are protected before work begins.
